Literary ideology in manuscript and digital cultures

In this text, I argue that print culture privileges an aesthetic episteme while the creations of the manuscript and digital cultures demand an ethical episteme. The ethical-aesthetic dialectics underlies the game-literature binarism, where the hermeneutics that correspond to literature are based on the search for meaning while in games and digital literature the question of meaning is secondary and involves manipulation and appropriation of the user, turning, in some part, the print culture figure of the reader into an analytical obstacle. To explain my thesis, I draw on the Aristotelian distinction between epistêmê and phronêsis, the figure of the hacker, the contraposition between the tropes of ambiguity and the ergodic, and the analysis of the presuppositions of the hegemonic critical line of Libro de buen amor that emanate from poststructuralist and philological paradigms. My intention is to show how what I call literary ideology determines the questions we ask to works that can only be conceived as literature by abstracting the notion and its connotations of the material and discursive conditions that gave it its current meaning.
